Margaret River, Western Australia has something to attract all types of tourists, but its internationally acclaimed wine regions are the perfect vacation spot for Chardonnay enthusiasts. Not to mention the spectacular coastal scenery, fascinating ancient caves and charming little villages that the Margaret River region has to offer.

As this southwestern WA district has many cities to visit and a variety of things to do nearby, motorhome rental is the best way to explore its numerous attractions.

When traveling on this convenient mode of transport, you’ll be grateful for the freedom it offers on the road. Whether you want to stay a few more days at a favorite spot, move on faster than anticipated, or travel further than planned… having your vacation home on wheels makes these itinerary changes a problem. Margaret River – 270kms from Perth – 3 hours

Situated south of Perth, the Margaret River region is packed with attractions, most famous for its wineries – but there’s so much more to this fantastic destination. Here’s a guide to some of the best things to see and do in and around the Margaret River’s expanse.

Margaret River Wineries – located throughout the region

Margaret River’s production of chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon is world-class, and the region contains more than a hundred wineries in its vicinity, with fifteen percent of Australia’s wine made here. You can try it for yourself at one of the many cellar doors in the area, here are just a few:

Farmers Market – situated in Margaret River Township

These weekly Saturday markets are a must when visiting Margaret River. The focus is on quality over quantity, and there are beautiful locally grown produce and flowers, as well as homemade food and preserves, candles and jewelry, all taking place between the ambiance of live music and the smell of hot coffee.

Gnarabup Beach – 8kms from the Margaret River – 8 minutes

A perfect beach for swimming, due to its sheltered location that offers calm waters with minimal waves. A popular place to snorkel or take a walk along the provided trails that have beautiful views, especially if you catch a sunset. There’s a lot of wildlife around here too, and a cafe overlooking the ocean.

Mammoth Cave – 15kms from Gnarabup Beach – 14 minutes

Of the various caves located in the region, Mammoth Cave is the most accessible, and can be explored with the help of a self-guided audio tour. This ancient landmark is the site of thousands of fossil excavations, with bones dating back to megafauna species that roamed Australia some 50,000 years ago. Some fossils are still visible in the cave today, such as the jaw of an extinct giant marsupial.

Hamelin Bay – 23kms from Mammoth Cave – 20 minutes

This stunning white sand beach and sparkling aquamarine ocean is a haven for wild stingrays, which lay their eggs in these protected waters of the Ngari Capes Marine Park. Because of the crystal clear clarity of the shallow waters, you can easily get a close-up view of these unique aquatic animals.

Witchcliffe – 26kms from Hamelin Bay – 20 minutes

This pretty town on the outskirts of Margaret River, affectionately called “Witchy” by its locals, is a great place to stop and grab a bite to eat at the charming local bakery. While in town, the exclusive Bellview Shell Collection will have you intrigued by the sheer variety of marine items and information displayed here. The Margaret River Candle Company offers workshops for those interested in candle making, or you can purchase beautiful gifts and souvenirs from their range of handcrafted candles and artwork.

The Berry Farm – 13kms from Witchcliffe – 15 minutes

Located among lush farmlands in Rosa Glen, this quaint cafe and winery is 15 minutes from the town of Margaret River. It’s a great place to stop for lunch, or even to buy some of their delicious homemade jams and marmalades.


The Maze’n Margaret River – 15kms from The Berry Farm – 15 minutes

A huge, well-maintained hedge maze nestled among spectacular gardens that showcase unique Australian plants and trees. In addition to the impressive maze, you’ll find plenty of other entertainment here, including bocce ball, mini golf, giant outdoor chess, quoits and more.

If you are returning to Perth, you will have a leisurely 3-hour drive back to the city.
